Amtrak is investing more than $16 million into the Johnstown Station, a station on its Pennsylvanian route between New York, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh.
The investment is funded by National Network and Northeast Corridor grants.
The project is part of the Johnstown Iron-to-Arts Corridor Project, Amtrak’s Americans with Disabilities Act Stations Program, and State of Good Repair Funding. It is served by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
In addition, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the project a $24.5 million RAISE Grant.
“Improvements to the Johnstown Station platforms, tunnels, and track will ensure accessible, inclusive, and safe experiences for everyone as they travel with us,” George Holz, Amtrak assistant vice president of stations and facilities, said. “Additionally, the vital overall support for Amtrak and intercity passenger rail from the just-signed Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill gives us added confidence and resources to make this important investment here and at other facilities around the country.”
Improvements include track work to ensure a smoother ride, a snow melt system on the platform, new concrete and lighting maintenance in the existing passenger tunnel, and making the station compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
Construction is expected to begin in October 2022 once all approvals are received.
