The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and federal and local economic and elected officials recently broke ground on the new $65 million Coatesville train station.

The new station will improve connections to the Amtrak Keystone Corridor, enhance multimodal connectivity, ensure freight movements through the area are maintained, and provide the surrounding community with a modern, accessible train station.

The building will feature site lighting and security, level boarding platforms, ramps, elevators, improved drainage, surface parking for local and regional commuters, and improved ADA accessibility.

In 2019 and 2020, streetscape projects improved access from Coatesville’s downtown area to the proposed new train station location.

PennDOT led multiple planning efforts with the Coatesville community before the project’s design to identify strategies that would revitalize the area surrounding the proposed train station.

Construction will begin before the end of the year, weather permitting, and is forecasted to be completed in 2025.

“As infrastructure is debated at the federal level, this project is a reminder that these investments are needed, and they work,” PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian said. “Additional federal investment will help us complete more projects like this across the state.”

The project received $700,000 from Chester County, $13 million in state transportation funds, and $52 million from the Federal Transit Administration.
