The global air transport industry recently released an industry declaration for achieving a long-term climate goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The declaration, Commitment to Fly Net Zero 2050, highlights ways the goal will be reached. The industry will commit to climate action initiatives such as improvements in operational efficiency and infrastructure, and hydrogen and electric aircraft technologies.
The industry also expects the production and uptake of sustainable aviation fuel to play a major role in reducing the climate impact of aviation.
The industry plans to work in partnership with governments worldwide.
“The road ahead will be challenging but aviation is no stranger to challenges,” Luis Felipe de Oliveira, Airports Council International, world director general, said. “This historic declaration shows the determination of the sector to work together to take this important climate action. It is now imperative that governments support these efforts to make this vital sector sustainable. This makes it all the more urgent that member states of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) support the adoption of a long-term climate goal at the 41st ICAO Assembly in 2022.”
Signatories to the declaration represent airlines, aircraft and engine manufacturers, air traffic management, airports, and major aviation industry associations.
