The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently awarded more than $431.8 million in grants through the Airport Improvement Program to 60 airports in 31 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Congress provides approximately $3.2 billion in funding annually to the program. This fiscal year, the FAA awarded more than 1,700 grants.
Projects usually must provide a local match, but the American Rescue Plan provides nearly $100 million for that purpose.
“With today’s awards, the FAA has provided $3.2 billion in airports funds this year to improve safety, environmental stewardship, and accessibility,” FAA Administrator Steve Dickson said. “These grants support airport infrastructure across our National Airspace System, providing federal investment to communities of all sizes, from remote areas to major metropolitan cities.”
Grants were awarded in three categories: Projects that increase safety, expand capacity and create jobs; projects that build more sustainable airports; and projects that increase access for rural, remote communities.
Awardees include:
- The Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, $35.6 million, for the enhancement of airfield safety by reconstructing a taxiway.
- The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, $35 million, for the reconstruction of two aircraft rescue and firefighting buildings, and to purchase zero-emissions passenger shuttle buses and associated charging infrastructure.
