The U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) $61.5 million through the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America Program.

Funds will be used to reconstruct 28 miles of I-90 in McCook and Minnehaha counties. During the project, structures will be rebuilt, safety and operational enhancements will be added, additional truck parking spaces will be added at westbound and eastbound rest areas, and the existing surface on eastbound and westbound lanes will be removed and replaced.

“We appreciate USDOT providing this grant to SDDOT,” Joel Jundt, transportation secretary, said. “Thanks to the hard work and support of Gov. (Kristi) Noem and our South Dakota congressional delegation, we’ve been able to secure funds for this project, as well as other vital transportation projects. Due to their efforts, I -90 will be safer for all users, including freight handlers, residents, and tourists, and it will enhance access to all communities statewide.”

The project will be completed in phases through 2024 as part of the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program’s schedule.

I-90 was built between 1964 and 1966 and spans 3,020 miles, making it the longest interstate in the United States. It is the most highly traveled corridor in South Dakota.
