The U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA METRO) a $30 million INFRA Grant for the State Route 57/60 Confluence Chokepoint Relief Project.
The project will relieve congestion and improve safety between the SR-57 and SR-60 freeways in Los Angeles County, a corridor traveled by 340,000 vehicles daily.
Plans include reconstructing the Grand Avenue overcrossing, reconfiguring the ramps at Grand Avenue, extending a lane on SR-57 through the confluence area, constructing an SR-60 bypass off-ramp to Grand Avenue, and constructing a bypass connector from Grand Avenue to SR-60.
LA METRO also received more than $242 million in state and local funding.
The department also awarded Los Angeles an $18 million INFRA Grant for the Community Infrastructure and Resiliency Zone Project: Safe Streets Infrastructure Component.
The program will enhance safety and alleviate traffic congestion by installing leading pedestrian interval signal enhancements at approximately 90 intersections and installing approximately 26 new traffic signals.
The project also will conduct street transformations and hardscape improvements, including pedestrian signals, sidewalk improvements, upgraded curb ramps, high visibility crosswalk markings, curb extensions, bus boarding islands, separated bike lanes, a center median pedestrian refuge island, additional shade trees, and new stormwater capture facilities.
