Virginia’s Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB), a 17-member board charged with approving funding allocations for the state’s transportation system, recently approved the Fiscal Year 2022 budgets for three departments.

CTB approved budgets for the Virginia Department of Transportation, $7.2 billion; the Department of Rail, $860.3 million; and Public Transportation and the Commonwealth Transportation Fund, $16.6 million for the Space Flight Fund, $19.7 million for the Department of Motor Vehicles, $26.7 million for aviation, and $47.8 million for the Port Trust Fund.

“The budgets and six-year program approved will advance our Commonwealth’s commitment to improving and maintaining infrastructure through the most critically needed projects,” Shannon Valentine, secretary of transportation, said. “The range of projects included will allow us to build and sustain economic opportunity for all Virginians.”

CYB also approved the FY 2022-2027 Six-Year Improvement Program (SYIP), which allocates $24 billion to highway, rail, and public transportation. SYIP funding includes $1.6 billion for rail planning and preservation, $4.2 billion for transit and transportation demand management initiatives, $1.3 billion for round four of the SMART SCALE prioritization program, $500 million for the Virginia Highway Safety Improvement Program, $500 million for the new Special Structure funding program, and $17.2 billion for Highway Construction Program projects.
