The Iowa Transportation Commission approved the Fiscal Year 2022-2026 Iowa Transportation Improvement Program at its meeting Tuesday.
The program, which lists investments in the multimodal transportation system, invests more than $2.8 billion to enhance highway safety features and modernize the highway system.
Approximately $3.6 billion is forecast to be available for highway right of way and construction. Although the COVID-19 pandemic delayed some projects, none were removed from the program.
The majority of the funding is through the federal Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act, set to expire on Sept. 30.
Program highlights include pavement rehabilitation work increased by $30 million for fiscal year 2022, and more than $1.2 billion has been invested in state-owned bridges.
The final phase of resiliency work on Iowa 2 in Fremont County from Horse Creek to I-29 is scheduled to begin next fiscal year. The project will support the construction of a protective dike to reduce closures during flooding events and elevate the roadway.
Other system enhancement projects include U.S. 63 in Tama County, U.S. 30 in Cedar County, and Super-2 improvements on U.S. 18 in Kossuth and Hancock counties.
Also included in the program are multiple new and existing interstate investment projects.
The program is available on the Iowa Department of Transportation’s website.
