NJ TRANSIT, the nation’s largest statewide public transportation system, plans to restore nearly 60 trains for the summer season and to increase ridership as the economy reopens.

Starting Sunday, additional service will be added between Long Branch and Bay Head and the North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL) Long Branch–Bay Head shuttle trains. Select weekday trains will resume service, and the Gladstone Branch trains will resume weekend service.

The Long Branch and Bay Head service was halted in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Weekend summer service will run through Sept. 11.

Five trains on the Northeast Corridor and New Jersey Coast Line will have service adjusted to better accommodate weekday commuters and prevent potential overcrowding.

“NJ TRANSIT is proud to be restoring such an extensive range of rail service to our system,” Kevin S. Corbett, NJ TRANSIT president and CEO, said. “The addition of the NJCL shuttle trains between Long Branch and Bay Head, along with the restoration of several other trains on many rail lines, will increase the frequency and reliability of rail service throughout our system and are especially necessary now – at a time when more and more customers are returning to our system, and frequent and reliable service is more critical than ever.”
