The Alabama Department of Transportation recently awarded $4.93 million in state funding to 21 road and bridge projects statewide through the Annual Grant Program.
The program was created in 2019 under the Rebuild Alabama Act. The act required the department to establish an annual program using $10 million from the state’s share of gas tax revenue for local projects.
Of the 21 awardees, 17 contributed a total of $2.08 million in local matching funds, although matching funds were not required for grant eligibility.
“More and more Alabamians are seeing road projects in their communities,” Gov. Kay Ivey said. “As we near the second anniversary of the passage of the Rebuild Alabama Act, we are showing the people of our state that we are true to our word, and money is being spent wisely. All revenue is being used to enhance critical infrastructure to make Alabama a better place to live, work and play.”
More projects will be awarded later this year.
The program requires all projects to begin work within one year of the awarding of funds. It is anticipated that the majority of the projects will be under contract by January.
In 2020, the program awarded $10.2 million.
