As part of its effort to transform Northeast Corridor train travel, Amtrak announced Friday that it is currently accepting letters of interest from those who want to partner with the organization.
Amtrak said it would accept letters of interest through Feb. 15, 2021, from contractors interested in doing construction associated work at the New Carrollton Station in Maryland. The project involves work inside the existing station as well as the construction of a side platform outside of the station. The organization said all work will have to be closely coordinated with Amtrak to ensure minimal impacts to train service.
Constructed in 1983, the New Carrollton station serves Amtrak and the Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) trains, Washington Metrorail, Metro buses, MTA buses and county transit, and commuting drivers who connect to transit and Amtrak there.
The expansion project is necessary to support higher frequency Acela service by expanding routing options for high-speed trains in the triple track territory between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Md., which is also heavily utilized by commuter trains.
Infrastructure work is already underway to prepare for the introduction of the new Acela fleet scheduled to begin entering service in 2021.
The New Carrollton Station is served by Amtrak’s Acela, Northeast Regional, Palmetto, and Vermonter trains. The station is located on the Northeast corridor, one of the busiest, most complex, and economically vital transportation systems globally, connecting eight states and the District of Columbia.
