The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) is seeking public input regarding its recently updated Maryland State Rail Plan.

The guidance includes a listing of rail projects, as well as outlines of public and private investments and policies that aid MDOT in its work with the railroad industry and others to support rail needs.

“A vibrant and up-to-date rail system is crucial for Maryland’s economy, providing access to jobs and moving goods across the state and the region,” MDOT Secretary Greg Slater said. “We need the input of residents, commuters, and our industry partners to help us ensure the Maryland State Rail Plan accurately reflects our goals and a strategic vision for rail system needs and opportunities.”

Every five years, the plan is updated – focusing on MARC, Amtrak, and freight operators that include CSX, Norfolk Southern, and statewide regional operators.

The survey is available online through Jan. 15, 2021. Officials request participants give impressions of existing service, rank priorities for future rail service, and offer suggestions for new or expanded infrastructure.

Once the public input period is completed, officials noted an advisory committee would review comments, hold meetings and conduct stakeholder interviews – adding an updated plan draft is expected to be prepared by summer 2021.
