Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Friday that he has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to solicit proposals on expanding the use of zero-emission technology at the Port of Los Angeles.
The RFI will further the Mayor’s goal of zero emissions drayage trucks serving the San Pedro Bay port complex by 2035.
“We can only turn the tide on the climate crisis if we work across every sector to reduce dangerous emissions, protect vulnerable neighborhoods from the perils of pollution, and rev up our investments in clean energy,” Garcetti said. “Our RFI sends a strong signal: Los Angeles is a laboratory for new technology, a pioneering destination for sustainability, and a place where we deploy the power of innovation to strengthen lives, secure livelihoods, preserve public health, and lead a just transition toward a greener economy and a more equitable future.”
As part of the RFI, the private sector is asked to provide input to the Port of Los Angeles as it looks at strategies to develop and adopt zero-emission trucks at the site. The port is the largest and busiest container port in the Western Hemisphere. North America’s leading seaport by container volume and cargo value facilitates more than $276 billion in trade during 2019.
“The Port is currently engaged in 16 different zero-emission demonstration projects designed to bring feasible technology to the marketplace,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka. ”Conversion of the Port drayage fleet to zero-emission technology involves tremendous financial investment and will take the collaboration and commitment of many stakeholders – both public and private – to create a viable market for zero-emissions drayage technology. This RFI is designed to recruit the best ideas available to help us serve as a catalyst and make a meaningful impact on climate change.”
Submission should address approaches to make the best use of public and private funding sources; new asset management solutions that can accommodate San Pedro Bay Ports’ scale; proposal for charging and fueling infrastructure; maintenance and procurement methods and models for public-private partnerships.
Responses must be submitted before 4 p.m., Jan. 7, 2021, to Tricia Carey at tcarey@portla.org.
