The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) announced Friday that is was awarded nearly $47 million in additional funding from the Federal Highway Administration for statewide road projects.
It marks the largest amount of federal funds the state has received in a single year.
The $46.8 million in federal highway monies will fund upgrades to the Interstate 15/215 Northern Beltway interchange project, which started earlier this year, among other projects. The money will offset revenue lost by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Known as the August Redistribution, the FHWA looks at funds given to states that have not yet been able to use the full amount originally given to them through authorizations, grants, and federal loans. The agency then reassigns the money to projects that are ready-to-go and meet all the federal funding requirements.
In order to qualify, the NDOT had to prove that it would fully utilize the federal funds in 2020 and that current projects the state is working on fit the requirements for receiving additional federal funding.
“In the last 17 years, we have brought more than $290 million in additional federal funding obligation home for vital Nevada transportation projects,” said NDOT Director Kristina Swallow. “This is about putting more federal dollars to work here in Nevada. I thank our financial management staff for ensuring that the state continually utilizes all available funding for important transportation projects.”
