Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) officials said the subsidiary of Tokyo-based Subaru Corp. is moving forward with its $158 million Lafayette expansion project.
In February, SIA unveiled expansion plans for its 820-acre campus – detailing construction of a new service parts facility, as well as a transmission assembly shop at its 4.7 million-square-foot plant. As a means of supporting growth, officials said the company plans to create up to 350 new jobs by the end of 2023.
SIA has invested more than $2.2 billion in its operations since 1986, per officials, indicating an increase in annual production to 410,000 vehicles and broadening headcount to more than 6,000 Indiana associates.
State officials noted SIA represents one of more than 300 Japanese businesses operating in establishments in Indiana – employing more than 67,230 residents.
Indiana possesses the largest Japanese investment per capita and is one of two states serving as home to three Japanese automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) companies.
The Lafayette initiative represents SIA’s second major expansion in recent years, officials said, on the heels of a $140 million investment to support three-row, crossover Subaru Ascent production.
