California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) officials said a $100 million funding commitment would enhance statewide walking, bicycling, and transit options.
The recently approved 2020 State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP) serves as a commitment to incorporate cycling and pedestrian improvements into the state’s highway system.
Authorities said Caltrans developed an updated action plan with the California Walk/Bike Technical Advisory Committee to increase bicycling, walking, and transit trips statewide.
“The safety of all Californians, including those who walk and bike must be a priority when we consider future projects,” Toks Omishakin, Caltrans director, said. “This action plan represents a critical step in our effort to build and enhance a transportation system for all users and make our communities more livable and vibrant places.”
Caltrans maintains $100 million has been allocated to expand bicycle and pedestrian access, noting SHOPP preserves and improves state transportation infrastructure for all users, with public engagement being essential to the process.
Caltrans is presently communicating with stakeholders to identify walking and cycling enhancements to 22 projects, while more projects are slated to be determined via community outreach and collaboration.
Caltrans is encouraging input on means of improving local bike lanes and walking paths, with the agency requesting stakeholders and the public learn more via catplan.org.
