Tennessee state officials are touting the early completion of the I-440 Reconstruction Project, which officials said represents the largest project in Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) history.
“The I-440 project is a perfect example of the importance of investing in our infrastructure,” Gov. Bill Lee said. “This roadway is a vital part of Nashville and Middle Tennessee’s transportation system and it will now be capable of serving this community for decades to come.”
The effort was completed one month ahead of the contract completion date, per authorities, noting TDOT personnel recently celebrated the feat by taking a caravan ride on the new I-440.
The $154.8 million project features a new asphalt roadway, three travel lanes in each direction – plus auxiliary lanes, new lighting, new color overhead message boards, new landscaping, and ramp safety improvements at the 21st Avenue and Murphy Avenue exits.
“The I-440 Reconstruction Project is not only the largest in TDOT’s history but also one of the most challenging to construct,” TDOT Commissioner Clay Bright said. “I want to commend the entire project team for their hard work and dedication to meeting the aggressive completion date. I also want to thank the public for their patience during the construction process.”
Officials indicated the I-440 Reconstruction Project was one of 962 transportation projects included in the state’s 2017 IMPROVE Act legislation.
