The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) is espousing the benefits of automated driving development activities via its Automated Vehicle Transparency and Engagement for Safe Testing Initiative (AV TEST Initiative).

The USDOT will host virtual kickoff events this week designed to raise Automated Driving Systems development and testing activity awareness, in addition to facilitating greater public understanding around supporting domestic on-road testing of prototype Automated Driving Systems.

On Wednesday, leaders from private-sector organizations are slated to assemble virtually to focus on different use cases of Automated Driving Systems, with topics including a discussion of opportunities and challenges in safe on-road testing, design for inclusivity, and emerging technologies that are being used among industry stakeholders.

On Thursday, there will be dialogue from leaders in industry, academia, and government to garner a broad overview regarding the need, role, and history of on-road testing of automotive technologies.

Topics will include the current state of development and prototype testing in the United States, with a focus on technical progress achieved to date, vital remaining challenges and activities underway.

The USDOT said the AV TEST Initiative seeks to increase transparency by providing an online, public-facing platform for sharing automated driving system on-road testing activities and other pertinent information with the public.
