Multiple projects, totaling more than $65 million, are continuing or starting in June, the Illinois Department of Transportation said Thursday, June 4.

The seven projects will continue through the 2020 construction season, officials said. Nearly $43 million for the projects along the Interstate 90/Interstate 39 corridor comes from Gov. J. B Pritzker’s Rebuild Illinois capital program.

“Across the nation, highway construction and maintenance continue as essential infrastructure activities. Illinois is no different,” said Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “These projects represent a significant investment in the Rockford area that will improve safety, mobility, and create economic opportunity for years to come. Please, slow down and pay extra attention driving in and around any work zone.”

Four of the projects are ongoing construction, and three will start later this summer. The projects include:

  • Reconstruction of the U. S. 20 and Illinois 2 interchange, a project that began in spring 2019;
  • Resurfacing from Baxter Road to Harrison Avenue, started earlier this year and scheduled to wrap up this fall;
  • Resurfacing of Illinois 251 from Machesney Park to the Wisconsin state line, started earlier this year and scheduled for completion in fall;
  • Pavement repairs to Illinois 2, starting in June and schedule for completion within a month;
  • Pavement repairs on Business U.S. 20, starting in July and taking approximately three months to finish;
  • Resurfacing of Business U.S. 20 and replacing traffic signals from Meridian Road to Springfield Avenue, starting in July and wrapping up three months later; and
  • Resurfacing Illinois 173 and I-39/I-90, with traffic signal upgrades, starting in July and completed within a month.

The IL DOT said drivers can expect delays and detours, and that they should be on the lookout for construction crews.
