The Automobile Association of America (AAA) maintains while gas pump prices continue to increase across the country, prices around Memorial Day have not been this low in nearly 20 years.
“However, as the country continues to practice social distancing, this year’s unofficial kick-off to summer is not going to drive the typical millions of Americans to travel,” Jeanette Casselano, AAA spokesperson, said. “Despite inexpensive gas prices, AAA anticipates this year’s holiday will likely set a record low for travel volume.”
An AAA analysis has determined nearly every state’s gas price average is more expensive on the week by an average of four cents.
Citing gas demand increasing in conjunction with states reopening and the Environmental Protection Agency soon lifting its waiver on the sale of winter-blend gasoline, the AAA said motorists can expect gas prices to continue to push higher, with the possibility of reaching $2 per gallon in the next few weeks.
Per the AAA, Idaho ranks first in the country’s top 10 largest weekly gas price increases, followed by Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Iowa, Colorado, Kansas, Maryland, Utah, Nebraska, and Minnesota.
Meanwhile, Mississippi serves as the nation’s least expensive market, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas, Alabama, Kansas, South Carolina, Louisiana, and Tennessee rounding out the top 10.
The AAA said motorists can find current gas prices with the organization’s free mobile app for iPhone, iPad, and Android.
