Crews are scheduled to begin a bridge replacement project near Chattanooga, Tenn., this month.

The bridges on I-24 in Hamilton County will be replaced in a $32.9 million project that uses both traditional techniques and an innovative process called Accelerated Bridge Construction, which requires short-term, total road closures so that crews can work around the clock and get the construction completed much quicker.

Slated to be replaced are the bridge on Belvoir Avenue over I-24 and the bridges on I-24 over Germantown Road.

The project is expected to begin on April 20, 2020, with the replacement of the Belvoir Avenue Bridge. Construction there is expected to be complete by winter 2020. The bridges over Germantown Road will be replaced using the ABC techniques. Work will begin under the existing bridges during the Belvoir Avenue project. In the spring of 2021, four weekend events will shut down the road there to complete the replacement. The entire project is expected to be complete in August 2021.

The Construction Manager for the project is Bell & Associates Construction, and the Design Manager for the project is Barge Design Solutions. Both groups are working with the TDOT to reduce risk and improve constructability.
