Philly Shipyard will build the newest class of training ship, according to the Maritime Administration
The new vessel, a National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV), will provide maritime training for America’s future mariners, as well as provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, the administration said in a press release. Philly Shipyard will build up to five of the new ships.
“This new world class vessel, constructed at an American shipyard, is part of our much-needed program to replace the aging training vessels currently operated by state maritime academies,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said.
Philly Shipyard was chosen by Tote Services, a contractor with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration. Tote Services has served as the vessel construction manager for the Maritime Administration since May 2019. Congress required that the vessel be procured using commercial design and build practices. Tote Services will transfer the NSMV to the Maritime Administration upon completion of the build.
The vessel features instructional space, a full training bridge, and space for up to 600 maritime cadets. The vessel will also have the capacity to support the federal government’s response efforts in national disasters. The vessel with have medical capabilities, a command and control platform and space for up to 1,000 first responders and recovery workers. The vessel will also have roll-on/roll-off ramping and cranes to load supplies and support equipment on and off easily in times of need.
