The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) recently touted the Kapolei Interchange Complex, Phase 2 project, noting it would provide an additional access point for Kapolei Town motorists.
The Kapolei Interchange project began in mid-2016 and, weather permitting, is scheduled to be completed by March 2020. The new interchange is expected to increase traffic flow by reducing the number of motorists taking the Makakilo off-ramp and motorists on Kalaeloa Boulevard between Farrington Highway and Kapolei Parkway.
The project, which officials said costs $64.5 million, with 80-percent federal funding and 20-percent state funding, provides motorists with an extended overpass of Wakea Street above the H-1 Freeway, connecting on- and off-ramps and directional signage.
After the dedication ceremony for the structures, the Kapolei interchange will be open for motorists to use. However, travelers are advised some closures will still be necessary to finish punch list items such as landscaping and permanent sign installation.
The HDOT extended gratitude to the public for cooperation and support in creating a safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation system for Hawaii.
