The recently introduced Electric Vehicle (EV) Freedom Act aims to develop a nationwide infrastructure of high-speed electric-vehicle charging stations within five years along the National Highway System.

The act also promotes the installation of chargers that are compatible with all EVs, and protects Americans who will build EVs and EV infrastructure through wage and Buy America requirements.

The Secretary of Energy and the Secretary of Transportation, under the act, will devise a plan to create the network of EV chargers and submit the plan to Congress.

The act has the support of multiple organizations.

“The solutions to our climate crisis demand that no community is left behind,” the Sierra Club said in a statement. “The Sierra Club is proud to endorse these transformative pieces of legislation that will build out our nation’s clean energy infrastructure in every community. We must electrify transportation as quickly as possible and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels to tackle the climate crisis, and this type of investment ensures that the shift to clean transportation is built by hard-working Americans.”

Other supporters include the Center for Transportation and the Environment, the Environmental Defense Fund, and the Environmental Law and Policy Center.

The bill was introduced by Reps. Andy Levin (D-MI) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).
