The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) recently awarded the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon, an $87.4 million Capital Investment Grants Program grant for its $175 million Division Transit Project.

The project will build a 15-mile bus rapid transit line between Portland’s Central Business District and the city of Gresham. The line will connect many destinations, including Portland State University, Portland Community College’s Southeast Campus and Worker Retraining Center, and the Oregon Health & Sciences University, with a connection to Mt. Hood Community College.

“FTA is proud to join our partners in Oregon to improve public transportation in Portland,” K. Jane Williams, FTA acting administrator, said. “The Division Transit Project will provide fast and efficient service, improving mobility and access to convenient transit service, particularly for the many students who live along the corridor.”

The Capital Investment Grants Program funds major transit infrastructure projects. To qualify for consideration to receive program funds, projects by law must go through a multiyear, multistep process

The FTA has advanced funding for 25 new CIG projects nationwide, totaling approximately $7.5 billion in funding commitments since January 2017.

Funding for the Division Transit Project brings FTA’s total funding agreements to more than $4.50 billion.
