Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao announced the Ensuring American Leadership in Automated Vehicle Technologies: Automated Vehicles 4.0 (AV 4.0) report at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.

The report is a set of federal principles for the development and integration of automated vehicles. There are three areas of focus: ensuring a consistent regulatory approach, prioritizing safety and security, and promoting innovation.

The report also outlines opportunities for collaboration, including federal investments in the AV sector; resources for innovators, researchers, and the public; and the Trump administration’s efforts supporting AV technology growth and leadership.

“AV 4.0 brings all of the important work happening on automated vehicle technologies across the federal government under one unified approach,” U.S. Chief Technology Officer Michael Kratsios said. “The federal principles released today help foster an environment for innovators to advance safe AV technologies, and put the U.S. in a position of continued leadership in the future of transportation.”

The principles unify efforts in automated vehicles across 38 federal departments, independent agencies, commissions, and the executive offices of the president.

The U.S. Department of Transportation also issued reports on emerging automotive technologies in 2017 and 2018 to address public concerns about safety, security, and privacy while encouraging innovation.
