New York state recently installed an additional 268 electronic message boards and traffic cameras along major traffic corridors.
The state Department of Transportation installed and activated 143 boards and 125 cameras.
The new units allow the department to reach more drivers with snowstorm-related travel bans and other traffic information. The units bring the state’s total to more than 550 boards and 1,150 cameras and are connected to the department’s 10 Transportation Management Centers.
“Severe weather events are happening with increasing frequency, and these new electronic message signs and traffic cameras will give motorists the most up-to-date information on road conditions and traffic,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. “Creating a 21st Century transportation system isn’t just about building new roads and bridges – it’s about giving drivers timely information so they can make informed decisions and arrive at their destinations safely.”
The units are part of an initiative to improve communication between motorists and traffic system managers. They are publicly accessible via 511NY.
Units are located along the New York State Thruway, Buffalo Metro Area highways, and Interstates 81, 84, 86, 87/Northway, 88, and 490.
The Thruway Authority also has deployed 78 permanent and more than 120 portable boards across its 570-mile system to prepare for winter weather.
