Work is slated to begin on one of its first Rebuild Illinois projects in early 2020, bringing construction to seven miles of Interstate 255, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).
The project will be divided into two separate sections and spaced out over 10 months. In those sections, though, the road will face a complete overhaul to combat deterioration. I-255 will be closed during these operations — an action IDOT said will reduce project time to 10 months from a projected four years. In all, it should cost around $64 million — $14 million less than if it had been completed in phases.
“As Metro East drivers know too well, I-255 was neglected for far too long – and repairing it is a massive undertaking that IDOT will complete as quickly and safely as possible for those who rely on this roadway,” Omer Osman, Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary, said. “As one of the first projects of the historic bipartisan ‘Rebuild Illinois’ effort, this is also one of the worst roads in the system today. We’ll be holding public meetings to keep residents informed of the plan and our progress. We look forward to a day when people feel good about driving on I-255 again.”
IDOT will host three public meetings to address the construction and alternatives routes over the next month.
The two sections of construction are separated by Interstate 64 and will include bridge repairs, safety improvements, and drainage upgrades. Work will begin on the northern end and move down. Each section will require a closure of the work zones in both directions for around five months, with work expected to conclude in late fall, 2020.
