The U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded $986 million in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport Improvement Program funding to 354 airports in 44 states and two territories.
It is the fifth allotment of $3.18 billion total in funding.
Projects include runway reconstruction and rehabilitation, noise mitigation, the maintenance of taxiways, aprons, and terminals, emissions reduction, and construction of firefighting facilities.
Airports receive funding based on activity levels and project needs. The FAA has the option to supplement awards with discretionary funding if projects exceed an airport’s available funds.
“Infrastructure projects funded by these grants will advance safety, improve travel, generate jobs and provide other economic benefits for local communities,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao said.
The largest grants include Florida’s St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, which was awarded $19.7 million for the rehabilitation of a runway; Vermont’s Burlington International Airport, which was awarded $16 million to reconstruct a taxiway; Minnesota’s International Falls Airport, which was awarded $15.9 million to reconstruct a runway; and Pennsylvania’s Philadelphia International Airport, which was awarded $13.4 million to reconstruct a taxiway.
