The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has created a new program under which applicants can appeal for state funding for transportation projects that improve safety, support job retention and growth, improve access or mobility, relieve congestion and help areas across the state improve the transportation system.
“Creating the Cost Share Program allows us to leverage both state and local dollars to help address important transportation needs across Kansas,” Kansas Secretary of Transportation Julie Lorenz said. “We look forward to working with Kansas communities to build projects that improve safety and keep the Kansas economy moving.”
Up to $50 million will be provided under the program next year, though the program will also leverage local and private funding. It currently has at least $11 million available and requires applicants to have a minimum 15 percent non-state cash match. Greater consideration will be given to those with more than the minimum match.
The program was made possible by a one-time, $50 million State General Fund Transfer to support funding above its base $11 million. At least a 25 percent match must be met for projects to gain access to those funds, though all transportation projects including roadway, rail, airport, bike, pedestrian, and public transit may apply, so long as the funds will only be used for construction. The funding was pulled from the $216 million in sales tax authorized by the state through 2020.
Applications for the first period opened Tuesday and must be submitted by Oct. 11, 2019. They will be reviewed twice annually to see that they meet the criteria in terms of objectives, eligibility, and requirements.
