The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey plans to activate its all-electronic tolling system at the Goethals Bridge on Wednesday.

The bridge connects Elizabeth, N.J., to Staten Island, N.Y.

Once activated, cashless tolling will be available on all three Staten Island crossings.

“The implementation of cashless tolling will not only improve drivers’ experiences at our crossings, but it will also contribute to improved air quality in our community by reducing emissions from idling vehicles,” Kevin O’Toole, Port Authority chairman, said. “The Port Authority is determined to do our part to contribute to a cleaner environment and bring exceptional customer service to our travelers.”

Drivers will travel on four open-road toll lanes and will pass under the cashless tolling gantries. Drivers will not be required to slow down.

The tolling system will debit drivers’ E-ZPass accounts or send them a bill in the mail if they do not have an E-ZPass account.

The old toll booths along with the toll islands under the administration building will be demolished by December.

Once the cashless system is activated, the bridge’s carpool plan will be discontinued.

The system will be activated Wednesday depending on weather. The port authority has completed system testing and lane striping.
