Twelve transportation projects from four U.S. regional competitions are now eligible for the 12th annual America’s Transportation Awards.

The Grand Prize winner will be selected by an independent panel of transportation industry experts while the public can vote online through Oct. 6 for the People’s Choice Award.

Awards will be given in three categories – quality of life/community development; best use of technology & innovation; and operations excellence – and in three category sizes.

The competition is sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

“These final projects are just a small sampling of the many ways in which state (departments of transportation) are making communities safer and supporting economic development,” Jim Tymon, AASHTO executive director, said. “Whether deploying innovations to save time and money or exploring strategies to move more people and goods, state (departments of transportation) are delivering projects and programs that create a more efficient transportation system for the movement of goods and services.”

Nominees in the large category are the Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Missouri/Illinois, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin departments of transportation.

Nominees in the medium category are the California, Maryland, and Ohio departments of transportation.

Nominees in the small category are the North Carolina and Pennsylvania departments of transportation.
