The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has issued 372 construction contracts through June 30 for bridge, highway and other transportation projects.
PennDOT has also replaced or rehabilitated 27 bridges and improved more than 800 miles of road.
The Rapid Bridge Replacement Project, a public-private partnership for bridges, has begun construction or has finished 558 bridges in the past six years. The bridges are located mostly in rural areas.
“We and our partners are making improvements to our large, old system in every corner of the state,” Pennsylvania Secretary of Transportation Leslie S. Richards said. “We work year-round to move people and goods as safely and efficiently as possible.”
This year, PennDOT plans to put out for bid $2.2 billion in projects.
Richards encourages motorists to use traveler information tools and to set up travel alerts using PennDOT’s 511PA system.
The free system provides weather forecasts, speed information, traffic delay warnings, and access to more than 950 traffic cameras. It is available through the 511PA website, a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or following regional Twitter alerts.
Motorists also are encouraged to read PennDOT’s 2018 Annual Report, that is available as a website and is viewable as a document.
