The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) this week released a data-based list of projects that are candidates for state transportation funding, an important step in the development of Kentucky’s 2020 Highway Plan.

In all, 123 projects are being considered under the impending six-year outline for spending recommendations. Of these, 49 projects that include interstates and highways have been marked high-ranking, while the remaining 74 have been labeled highly ranked enacted projects from the 2018 Recommended Highway Plan. All are based on SHIFT — the State Highway Investment Formula for Tomorrow — which uses safety, congestion, asset management, economic growth, and benefit-cost ratio data to form recommendations.

“SHIFT 2018 helped Kentucky leaders develop the most balanced, responsible and objective Highway Plan in modern times,” Transportation Secretary Greg Thomas said. “With the help of local transportation leaders, lawmakers, and the cabinet’s transportation professionals, we will continue to chart a dependable path forward for our citizens.”

Such leaders will form the next step of development, as they work on priority projects with regional impact. Leaders will identify priorities for their areas not included on the statewide list. When combined with the statewide lists and funding for priorities outside of SHIFT, the Recommended Highway Plan will be formed.
