Kentucky seeking design teams for bridge projects

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) recently announced it is seeking a design-build team to replace 102 bridges in more than 20 counties located in eastern and southeastern Kentucky.

The project is expected to last four years.

In a design-build team, a company handles both design and construction responsibilities. This allows for projects to be completed faster at often a lower cost.

Interested teams are required to attend a pre-proposal meeting in Frankfort on June 18 and must submit their qualifications to KYTC by July 1.

“Kentucky has a heavy concentration of bridges in the eastern and southeastern parts of the state that need to be replaced,” Royce Meredith, KYTC’s program manager for Bridging Kentucky, said. “This design-build project will allow the Bridging Kentucky Program to efficiently restore more than 100 bridges in poor condition with newer, safer bridges for buses, emergency vehicles and other vehicles traveling throughout the state.”

The Bridging Kentucky Program is a statewide initiative aimed at improving bridge safety and soundness. More than 1,000 bridges will be replaced or rehabilitated in six years.

KYTC plans to select a team by autumn.

KYTC also is using design-build teams for the I-Move Kentucky project along the Interstate 265 corridor in Louisville as well as two projects in northern Kentucky.
