The Dallas Fort Worth International (DFW) Airport will launch a sixth terminal in the coming years, in conjunction with American Airlines.
DFW plans to invest between $3 billion and 3.5 billion into the new terminal and upgrades to existing Terminal C. That money should be financed through bonds and repaid via airline rates and charges. The new terminal — Terminal F — will be located south of Terminal D and contain up to 24 new gates. DFW intends to work closely with American Airlines on the project, with a plan likely to be finalized as part of their next airlines lease agreement.
“The new Terminal F and the expansion that could follow will provide the region with the growth it needs to compete with international business centers,” Sean Donohue, CEO of DFW, said. “The Airport is growing faster than ever, and it needs to keep pace with the Dallas-Fort Worth economy to provide jobs and connections for businesses and families.”
Design work is already underway. DFW is already American Airlines’ largest hub, meaning that the expansion will be a significant gain for them as well. Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price said that she hopes the project will spur economic development and jobs in the area.
“We look forward to accommodating the continued growth of our city and the region through infrastructure improvements and expansion at DFW Airport,” Price said. “We’re glad to see DFW’s anchor carrier, American Airlines, headquartered in Fort Worth, collaborate with the Airport to take this area to new heights.
