A total of 78 percent of Americans believe a national transportation policy is critical, according to a survey by infrastructure solutions firm HNTB Corp.

These survey respondents believe a policy would improve safety, reliability, mobility, and accessibility.

“An efficient transportation network incorporates multiple modes of travel, seamlessly integrated and accessible to all,” John Barton, HNTB senior vice president, said. “Mass transit is a primary component of our transportation network, and our transit systems need increased investment to ensure their continued safety, resiliency, and reliability, and to support the modernization of critical transit infrastructures, such as signal systems, tracks, rolling stock and stations.”

A high-quality transportation system is vital for continued economic prosperity and quality of life, 73 percent of respondents said.

Two-thirds of respondents said consistent funding for infrastructure investments is extremely or very important. The most favored source of funding was tolls and user fees paid only by those who use tolled facilities, 55 percent; followed by taxes paid by everyone, 45 percent.

When asked their top priorities, respondents said establishing efficient multimodal connectivity between subway/transit systems and airports, 84 percent; highways, 69 percent; bridges, 44 percent; and public transportation, 38 percent.

The majority of respondents reported an increase in traffic congestion.
