The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) is wading into the discussion of autonomous vehicles, with plans to convene a panel of experts and provide related safety recommendations for state agencies, law enforcement, and others.
The panel will begin its work in May, with support from State Farm. Its members will be selected from federal agencies, automotive and technology industries, law enforcement, national safety groups, and the GHSA’s own State Highways Safety Office members. Together, they will consider educational and enforcement challenges and present ways they think traffic safety programs could be adapted to the changing vehicular landscape.
“Autonomous vehicles and burgeoning safety technologies hold tremendous potential for saving lives on our roads, but public understanding of what these vehicles are – and aren’t – capable of is paramount toward achieving these benefits,” Jonathan Adkins, GHSA executive director, said.
After the panel’s inaugural May 8 meeting, the GHSA itself intends to create a white paper addressing its findings. Its presentation should follow in late August.
