Virginia recently signed an agreement with the Hampton Roads Transportation Accountability Commission and the Hampton Roads Connector Partners design-build team for the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion Project.
The $3.8 billion HRBT project is the largest in the Virginia Department of Transportation’s history and will add two, two-lane tunnels. The project also will widen the four-lane sections of Interstate 64 in Hampton between Settlers Landing Road and the Phoebus shoreline. The four-lane section of I-64 in Norfolk between the Willoughby shoreline and the I-564 interchange also will be widened.
The project will correct the area’s transportation challenges, Gov. Ralph Northam said.
The sections of I-64 carries more than 100,000 vehicles during peak travel periods. Completion of the project will increase capacity on one of the region’s most congested roadways and ease congestion in southeastern Virginia.
“The improvements to the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel will significantly enhance the quality of life for all those who utilize this public asset on a daily basis,” Delegate Chris Jones (R- Suffolk and Chesapeake) said.
Over the life of the project, 28,000 new jobs are expected to be created and more than $4.6 billion made in investments.
HRBT is forecasted to be completed by November 2025.
