In 2018, trips on shared micromobility, shared bicycles or e-scooters, more than doubled compared to 2017, according to a National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) report.
At the end of 2017, there were approximately 44,000 dockless pedal bikes nationwide. Most dockless bike-share companies have since replaced their bike fleets with e-scooters. Currently, there are approximately tens of thousands of e-scooters nationwide.
Last year, 36.5 million bike-share trips were taken, a 9 percent increase from 2017, and 38.5 million scooter-share trips were taken.
“With tens of millions of trips each year, shared micromobility continues to be a popular form of transportation,” Corinne Kisner, NACTO executive director, said. “Cities are proactively thinking about how to harness the incredible potential of these shared services in the public right-of-way. As stewards of the public realm, it is vital that cities retain authority over their streets. State legislators must ensure that cities have the ability to plan, regulate, and manage shared micromobility systems for safe, sustainable, and equitable outcomes.”
E-bikes are used twice as frequently as pedal bikes and have the most use of any shared micromobility vehicles. Usage is measured by ride/vehicle/day.
Bikes are used most during rush hours.
