A competitive two-step process to find innovative proposals that reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions will result in $3 million awarded to the winners.
Funding is provided through the New York State Department of Transportation and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
The competition is part of the state’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2030. In New York, one of the largest producers of energy related greenhouse gas is the transportation sector.
Projects must be in one of two categories: efficient mobility solutions or efficient infrastructure, operations, and systems planning.
Efficient mobility solutions projects are those that reduce transportation congestion by emphasizing more energy-efficient modes of transportation.
Efficient infrastructure, operations, and systems planning projects are those that increase transportation efficiency.
All projects must increase access to alternative modes of transportation, demonstrate new technologies, or make roads safer and be applicable statewide. Applicants must submit concept papers by Oct. 30.
The state also has launched a number of other clean transportation strategy initiatives.
The state has the goal of having 10,000 electric vehicle charging stations installed by 2022. Last year, New Yorkers purchased more than 16,000 electric vehicles, a 60 percent increase from 2017.
