The Port of Virginia is on schedule to complete its $320 million expansion project in June.
Container stack No. 1 began operating at Virginia International Gateway this week. This marked the end of construction at the terminal, which now has double the annual container throughput capacity.
“This new capacity is quickly being integrated into the operation and The Port of Virginia is beginning to see positive results,” John F. Reinhart, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority, said. “Our turn-times for motor carriers are improving, there is better flow at our gates and our service levels are trending in the right direction. We are on-budget, on-time and with the end clearly in sight, we are already seeing the benefits.”
During construction, 13 additional container stacks were added to the 15 existing stacks. Each has two new rail-mounted gantry cranes.
The existing stacks will be refurbished.
Other expansion projects include an additional 800 feet and four cranes added at the wharf, four cranes and 19,600 feet of track added to the rail yard, the future addition of a total of 17 inbound and 13 outbound gate lanes, and the addition of a new terminal operating system and a reservation system for motor carriers.
