The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced Tuesday more than $60 million in funding for University Transportation Centers (UTCs) currently investigating solutions for transportation issues.

In all, 32 UTCs were selected. The same UTCs previously received grant funding through the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, for efforts made at the local, regional and even national levels. They seek to train new generations of transportation professionals while attempting to advance U.S. research, technology, and expertise in the field.

“The Department continues to invest in the future of American transportation by funding these research efforts at leading institutions of higher education,” U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao said.

USDOT hopes that such funding will help its overall goal of improving safety and performance in the transportation system through the development and deployment of technologies and new practices.
