Amtrak is seeking a general contractor for the Claytor Concourse at the 110-year-old Washington Union Station in Washington, D.C.

The station provides commuter rail and intercity passenger service.

The concourse will be renovated in two phases. Construction is expected to begin later this year and be completed in 2022.

The concourse provides customer amenities, retail and food establishments, and waiting areas.

Plans include adding more restrooms, additional lighting, new architectural finishes, doubling the concourse’s capacity, upgrading and relocating mechanical and electrical equipment, providing additional space for support services and constructing a premium lounge.

Amtrak is coordinating the project with commuter and transit partners as well as the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation and the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Railroad Administration.

Washington Union Station underwent a three-year, $160 million renovation in the 1980s, and Claytor Concourse was added. The renovation was completed in 1988.

Another three-year renovation began in 2013 and was completed in 2016. It repaired damage to the ceiling of the Main Concourse caused by an August 2011 earthquake.

Daily, more than 100,000 passengers from Amtrak, Maryland Area Regional Commuter rail, Virginia Railway Express and other modes of transportation pass through the station as do 85 trains.
