A $1.9 million intersection modernization in Volney, New York, has been completed, according to Paul A. Karas, acting commissioner of the New York State Department of Transportation.
The project eases traffic flow at County Route 45 and State Route 481 by changing how secondary road traffic crosses or turns left. The project’s Restricted Crossing U-Turn intersection is the first intersection with this design in the state. It features two legal U-turns constructed in the median of Route 481, a six-lane road.
Drivers make a right turn followed by a U-turn. The first U-turn location is eastbound on Route 45 and directs motorist to turn right onto Route 481 south while the second location is westbound on Route 45 and directs traffic right onto Route 481 north.
“Safety is our top priority and the innovative approach taken at Routes 481 and 45 in Oswego County is an example of the State’s progressive thinking when it comes to public safety and roadway improvements,” Karas said. “Gov. (Andrew) Cuomo is making smart investments in transportation infrastructure across New York State and the modern new intersection in Volney will keep traffic moving, supporting the Central New York economy so that it continues to rise.”
