The U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao announced last week that the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) would award $366.2 million in grants for the improvement of the nation’s bus systems.
In all, the grants will benefit 107 projects, which include equipment rehabilitation, bus replacement, and development of new operations centers or transit facilities. Funds stem from the FTA’s Buses and Bus Facilities Infrastructure Investment Program.
Every state is getting something in the arrangement, though demand dramatically exceeded the available funds. In all, 339 projects had applied for funding.
“Bus transportation is the most widely available form of public transportation across the country,” FTA Acting Administrator K. Jane Williams said. “These grants are a significant step in achieving the Administration’s goal of rebuilding our nation’s transportation infrastructure.”
