A total of $15 million was set out to award two new University Transportation Centers (UTC) last week as part of a funding opportunity promoted by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT).

Such centers have helped progress a number of interests in the transportation industry, including things like driverless vehicles. For these particular centers, the USDOT is interested in having one center focus on relieving traffic congestion, while the other focuses on improving the durability and life of overall transportation infrastructure.

“Our Universities are at the forefront of solution-oriented research addressing America’s changing demographics and increased freight volumes,” Keith Nelson, senior advisor for research and technology, said. “These funds will support UTC programs that provide students with real opportunities to take part in cutting-edge transportation research.”

Universities and other institutions of higher learning are currently able to apply for funding through the grant website. Applications close on Dec. 3, 2018. Each approved center will receive $7.5 million, as provided through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018.
