Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) recently completed infrastructure improvements along the Red Line Ashmont branch and Mattapan Line. The improvements will help improve system resiliency, modernize aging infrastructure, and support service reliability.
“I’m proud of the MBTA for completing another major step in modernizing the Red Line, which leads to improved reliability for all of our riders,” Phillip Eng, MBTA General Manager and interim secretary of transportation, said. “I want to thank our crews for their work and to our riders for their patience while these valuable signal, track, and power upgrades were completed.”
A new digital signal system was installed that will modernize the train control infrastructure and improve operational reliability. It replaces an analog signal system. The agency invested $295.5 million to install the digital system on the Red and Orange lines.
Other work included track and tamping work, ramps repairs, upgrades to the Codman Yard Facility power substation, a conduit was installed over the Adams Street Bridge near Milton Station, track and tamping work between Savin Hill and Fields Corner, and bridge and retaining wall inspections.
Work and testing was conducted while service was suspended on the T between Broadway and Ashmont on the Red Line and between Ashmont and Mattapan on the Mattapan Line.
