Illinois and three other Midwest states are partnering to build the Lake Michigan EV Circuit Tour, a network of light-duty electric vehicles (EV) chargers spanning more than 1,100 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline.
The goal of the scenic route is to provide EV drivers with long-distance travel vacation opportunities, support growth of the region’s share of electric vehicles, and safeguard industry electrification leadership. It will connect coastal communities, lighthouses and tourism attractions.
The chargers will connect to existing charging infrastructure networks at large entertainment attractions in Chicago, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Traverse City and other locations. Many of the network’s chargers already are operable. The remainder will to be completed within the next few years.
“The Great Lakes are the crown jewel of the upper Midwest, and this initiative proudly blends our clean energy goals with the natural beauty that attracts countless visitors each year,” Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said. “The Lake Michigan EV Circuit Tour represents the Midwestern spirit at its best — that we are all better off when we look out for our neighbors. It’s yet another reason to come Enjoy Illinois.”
The multistate partnership signed an agreement to build and maintain the EV chargers and market the new eco-tourism attraction.
