Amtrak officials announced this week that work will continue at New York Penn Station throughout winter and have minimal impact on scheduled train operations.
Work will begin on Tracks 11 and 14 starting Jan. 3 and will include installing a safety construction barrier on the platform to protect passengers, disposing of debris, and removing, replacing, and installing new timber block ties and concrete.
There will be no reductions or modifications in Amtrak and New Jersey Transit Corp. service. Long Island Rail Road trains will experience minimal schedule changes.
Amtrak is investing $7.6 million in the project that is expected to be completed in mid-April.
“Modernizing and investing in infrastructure is a continuous process, and Amtrak is committed to making investments towards updating infrastructure when needed,” Amtrak President and CEO Richard Anderson said. “We thank our customers as well as our partners at NJ TRANSIT and Long Island Rail Road for their patience and continued cooperation with our efforts to keep this important infrastructure in a state of good repair.”
The project is part of Amtrak’s Infrastructure Renewal Program, a maintenance program to improve the station’s reliability and performance.
New York Penn Station sees more than 1,300 trains each weekday.
Amtrak has invested more than $150 million in infrastructure in the New York region.
